KATHMANDU: The government has announced that it will ensure 24-hour access to clean drinking water through a smart distribution system within the next five years.
Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle made the announcement while presenting the budget for fiscal year 2026/27 in the Federal Parliament.
He said that 65 percent of citizens will have access to safe drinking water within three years, and 100 percent coverage will be achieved within five years.
The government also said it will strengthen regulatory mechanisms to ensure water supply quality, pricing structure, and service accountability.
For sustainable water management in the Kathmandu Valley, the government announced a restructuring of the existing tariff system.
It also proposed merging the Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board, Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited, the Project Implementation Directorate, and the Water Supply Tariff Fixation Commission into a single unified entity.
