Oli claims regressive democracy was hatched to undermine democracy and left movement

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has claimed that a “regressive conspiracy” was orchestrated on Bhadra 23 and 24 to weaken democracy and dismantle the leftist movement in Nepal.

Addressing a programme organized by the Madan Bhandari Foundation at the National Assembly Hall in Kathmandu on Sunday to mark the 75th birth anniversary of late leader Madan Bhandari, Oli alleged that his constitutionally formed government had been removed through false accusations and public outrage amplified via social media and what he described as “mobile farming.”

Oli argued that although forming and changing governments is a parliamentary process, parliament was dissolved through forceful political manoeuvring to institutionalize regression.

Claiming that right-wing and reactionary forces were becoming increasingly active against the country, the UML chair warned against underestimating his party.

“We are not finished. We will rise again and move forward by defeating reactionary forces and advancing progressive change,” he said.

Oli also defended his government’s record on development and infrastructure, urging critics to evaluate its performance based on measurable indicators.

Recalling the political developments before the election, he said he had warned democratic forces about an emerging unfavourable environment, but his concerns were ignored.

Referring to parties that had once viewed UML as being on a difficult path while considering themselves on a “highway,” Oli said political realities had ultimately brought them to the same point.

He maintained that CPN-UML’s political, social and economic policies remain appropriate and ruled out any policy compromise or negotiation in the name of party unity.

Reaffirming commitment to updating the People’s Multiparty Democracy (PMD) doctrine in line with changing times, Oli said UML’s goal extends beyond winning elections to achieving the vision of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.”

He also criticized the current government and stressed the need for democratic and leftist forces to work together to counter what he termed ongoing regression and guide the country in the right direction.
