Ramkumari Jhankri wins National Assembly seat

KATHMANDU: Leader Ramkumari Jhankri, who rejoined the CPN-UML on Kartik 24 after spending nearly four years with the CPN-Unified Socialist, has been elected to the National Assembly representing Lumbini Province.

Jhankri secured victory in Sunday’s National Assembly elections with the backing of the alliance between Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, ensuring a smooth win.

In her return to parliament after four years, Jhankri received 6,303 votes. The Congress-UML alliance won all three National Assembly seats from Lumbini Province.

On the women’s quota, Jhankri emerged victorious, while Basudev Ghimire ‘Jangali’ of the Nepali Congress secured the National Assembly seat on the disability quota with 5,322 votes. Another seat went to Congress leader Chandra Bahadur KC, who won with 5,977 votes.

CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has previously called for leaders who had left the party to return, appreciating their past contributions to party building and expansion. Following this call, Jhankri resumed her political journey with UML.

Her previous dissatisfaction arose when Madhav Kumar Nepal formed an alliance with the Maoist Centre and other parties. Jhankri, who had served as a House of Representatives member before leaving UML four years ago, needed UML’s support to return to parliament.
