RSP gears up to approve Balen as PP leader before March 27



KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is scheduled to hold a secretariat and central committee meeting on the morning of March 26 to finalize key party decisions ahead of Balendra (Balen) Shah’s appointment as Prime Minister.

The secretariat meeting is expected to propose senior leader Balen Shah as the leader of the parliamentary party (PP). The proposal will then be approved during the central committee meeting. Once approved, Balen will immediately assume the position of parliamentary party leader.

The RSP, which has not yet held its first general convention since its establishment four years ago, will also use these meetings to decide on amendments to its statute. Newly elected members of the House of Representatives are scheduled to take their oath on March 26.

Party leader Ganesh Parajuli stated, “There is a plan to hold a party meeting at 2 pm on March 26 to appoint Balen as the parliamentary party leader. These decisions will likely be made in the morning session, before the oath-taking of the MPs. Other processes will follow immediately after the parliamentarians take their oath.”

Meanwhile, the Parliament Secretariat has confirmed that Balendra Shah will take the oath as Prime Minister on March 27, coinciding with Ram Nawami, a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ram.

While preparations for his swearing-in are underway, information regarding the oath-taking of the ministers has not yet been released.

RSP General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti also confirmed that Balen will officially become Prime Minister on Ram Nawami. According to party leaders, the parliamentary party meeting will formally elect Balen as party leader, a necessary step to advance him to the position of Prime Minister in line with RSP Secretariat and Central Committee decisions.

Before his swearing-in, the parliamentary party meeting will finalize policy decisions, including amendments to the statute. Parajuli added, “As per rules and procedures, the parliamentary party meeting will be held before the oath-taking. Following that, Balendraji will take the oath as Prime Minister.”
