KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress former General Secretary Prakash Man Singh has said the party has been weakened due to the move toward a special general convention.
Speaking at an event held in Kathmandu on Sunday, Singh said his side had repeatedly advised against holding a special general convention, but the suggestions were ignored, pushing the party toward further weakness and division.
Singh said a special general convention was not the appropriate way to resolve the internal disputes within the party. However, he argued that the process was moved forward against their position, resulting in further conflict and polarization within the Nepali Congress.
He said the time had come for the regular general convention and that the party leadership should also be selected through the regular democratic process.
According to Singh, the party would be strengthened if a popular leader with the support of party cadres were to reach the leadership through the regular general convention.
The former general secretary urged party leaders and cadres to focus on strengthening unity within the Nepali Congress rather than engaging in activities that could weaken the organization.
He also warned that the disputes and polarization within the party could have an impact on its organizational structure, stressing the need to create an environment of consensus and unity between the leadership and party cadres.
Singh emphasized the need to strengthen the institutional structure and democratic practices of the Nepali Congress, urging the party to move beyond factionalism and divisions.
He also expressed confidence that his side would receive justice in the ongoing dispute over the official status within the Nepali Congress.
