KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has claimed that the party restructuring task force has prepared a unified report and agreed not to include issues such as the resignation or removal of the party chairman, KP Oli.
Basnet said the agreement was reached at the task force meeting held today (Sunday). He said the report will be presented at the party Secretariat meeting before being taken to the Central Committee meeting, which begins tomorrow (Monday).
According to Basnet, the task force meeting held at the party office today incorporated the reports prepared by Vice Chairman Ram Bahadur Thapa and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel into a unified document.
“Given the overall situation, three leaders were assigned the responsibility of preparing a unified report by incorporating all draft proposals submitted after the Balthali meeting of the task force, as well as suggestions made by members during the meetings. An integrated report was presented today, and we used it as the main basis for discussion,” Basnet said after the meeting.
Basnet said reports that the task force was seeking the resignation or removal of the chairman were misleading. He claimed that an agreement had been reached not to seek the chairman’s resignation, remove him from the post, or criticize him publicly.
He also said there was an agreement to convene the National Representative Council in a manner that demonstrates party unity and to launch a strong movement against what he described as the current government’s “authoritarian, vindictive, autocratic and anti-people” style.
Regarding calls for a special general convention or special legislative convention, Basnet said such a convention would not be called at present. He said leadership change would naturally be addressed at the party’s regular general convention and that there was no need to raise the issue separately at this stage.
“Whether to call a special general convention or a special legislative convention is not an issue at present, and neither will be called now,” he said. “Leadership change is naturally an issue that can arise at the regular general convention of a communist party. There is no need to explain it at length. A suitable conclusion can be reached by discussing previous decisions at the legislative convention.”
Basnet said suggestions submitted by 13 groups would be incorporated into the unified report. He reiterated that the report would not include the issue of the chairman’s resignation or other related demands.
