KATHMANDU: A Nepali national working in the Strait of Hormuz has been detained by Iranian forces amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that one Nepali has been taken into custody from the strategic maritime zone.
Ramkaji Khadka, joint secretary and head of the West Asia Division at the ministry, said the individual, identified as Amrit Jha, was serving as a crew member on a vessel operating in the area.

According to the ministry, Jha was detained by Iranian forces while on duty. His permanent address in Nepal has not yet been confirmed.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, the ministry said the detained individual is part of a ship’s crew and that further details are being gathered.
