Supreme Court hearing underway on Deuba faction’s writ against Gagan Thapa, Election Commission

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court is currently hearing a writ filed by the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress challenging the Election Commission’s decision to recognize Gagan Thapa as party president. Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel is presiding over the case.

The writ, filed on Sunday, contests the Election Commission’s Friday decision that withdrew recognition from the Deuba faction and granted it to Thapa’s camp. Initially listed ninth on the hearing schedule, the court began proceedings immediately.

Tuesday’s hearing coincides with the nomination schedule for direct elections to the House of Representatives, set for March 5. Most leaders of the Deuba faction have already received tickets from Thapa.

The Supreme Court’s decision could have significant implications, potentially affecting candidacies not only in Congress but across other parties. The court may issue an interim order, ask for a show-cause response, or summon the Election Commission and relevant parties for further discussion.

Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, publicity head of the Deuba faction, said the writ was filed to challenge recognition given to the Thapa faction without their consent.
