Both factions of Nepali Congress converge at Election Commission amid party dispute

KATHMANDU: Leaders from both factions of the Nepali Congress, the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led group and the Gagan Thapa-led group, are currently at the Election Commission as the party grapples with an internal split.

Earlier on Friday, the Deuba faction, led by acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka, marched to the Commission in a show of force. Khadka had warned that if their faction is not recognized according to party rules, they are prepared to launch nationwide protests.

Meanwhile, leaders from the Gagan Thapa faction, elected as party president and central committee members through a special general convention, are also present at the Commission. Both groups are expected to submit documents and engage with the Commission regarding the party’s official recognition.

The Nepali Congress remains divided following the special general convention that elected Thapa as party president, with each faction claiming legitimacy. The presence of both sides at the Commission underscores the urgency for the Election Commission to address the dispute ahead of the upcoming elections.
