Two killed, one missing as 73 disaster incidents reported across Nepal in 24 hours

KATHMANDU: Natural disaster incidents have increased across the country amid continuous rainfall, with 73 incidents reported in the past 24 hours, leaving two people dead and one missing.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the incidents recorded between 8:45 am on Monday and 8:45 am Tuesday included floods, landslides, snakebites, heavy rainfall, and wildlife attacks.

The authority recorded 40 landslide incidents affecting 26 districts during the period. Two people died due to landslides.

NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat said 46-year-old Mandir Saud and 76-year-old Lal Bahadur Saud of Dhamigaun in Sannitriveni Rural Municipality-6 of Kalikot died after being buried in a landslide while they had gone to a mill to grind flour.

Similarly, 14 flood incidents affected 10 districts, leaving one person missing and another injured. Mahat said a person went missing along with a scooter in a flood in Makwanpur.

The authority also recorded 12 incidents of continuous rainfall affecting eight districts, along with four snakebite cases, one fire incident, and three wildlife attack incidents.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said heavy rainfall has been recorded in most parts of the country. Out of 380 rainfall measurement stations nationwide, rainfall data was recorded from 278 stations, including 83 human-operated and 297 automated stations.

The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded at the Narayani Field Office station in Chitwan, where 319.8 millimeters of rainfall was measured. More than 200 millimeters of rainfall was recorded at three locations around the station.

According to the department, rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters was recorded at 26 stations across the country.

Authorities have urged people to remain alert as continuous rainfall could increase river and stream levels, trigger landslides, and raise the risk of urban flooding.
