KATHMANDU: Leading music industry organizations have unveiled a voluntary labeling system to identify music created using generative artificial intelligence, aiming to improve transparency for listeners and encourage wider adoption across streaming platforms.
The initiative was announced on Friday by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and six other industry groups, including the organization behind the Grammy Awards.
In a joint statement, IFPI and RIAA said the labels are intended to help fans understand whether and how generative AI has been used in the creation of a recording.
The framework introduces two categories. The first, “AI-generated,” applies to recordings in which artificial intelligence created all or most of the creative elements, including tracks produced entirely from AI prompts or recordings featuring AI-generated lead vocals or key instrumental parts.
The second, “AI-assisted,” covers recordings that remain primarily the product of human creativity but include some AI-generated expressive elements. Under the guidelines, human performers must provide the lead vocals and primary instrumental tracks for music to qualify for this label.
The organizations said the system is designed for global, voluntary adoption, including by music streaming services.
The announcement comes as AI-generated music continues to grow rapidly. Music streaming platform Deezer recently said AI-generated tracks account for nearly half of its new uploads and introduced an AI music detector in June that it claims is 99.8 percent accurate.
Earlier this year, an Apple Music executive told Billboard that more than one-third of new uploads to the platform were created entirely using AI.
The Digital Media Association (DIMA), which represents streaming services including Apple Music, Amazon Music and Spotify, welcomed the initiative, saying improved AI metadata would help provide greater transparency for users.
Spotify has also taken steps to address AI-related concerns. In April, the platform introduced a “Verified by Spotify” label to help users identify authentic artists and has expanded efforts to promote AI disclosure and prevent impersonation. Apple Music and Spotify did not immediately comment on the new industry labeling framework.
