KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has blocked 35 websites and mobile applications that were allegedly streaming FIFA World Cup matches in Nepal without authorization.
According to the regulator, the websites and apps have been restricted from broadcasting FIFA World Cup 2026 content through web and mobile platforms within Nepal.
The NTA said the action was taken following concerns over unauthorized streaming of World Cup matches, which infringed on the exclusive broadcasting rights granted for the tournament in Nepal.
The authority stated that the official broadcasting rights for FIFA World Cup 2026 in Nepal have been acquired by a joint venture between Himalayan Television Network’s Himalayan Sports and DishHome under the HTV-DGO Broadcasting Consortium JV.
As a result, internet service providers and relevant stakeholders have been directed to prevent access to platforms found distributing World Cup content without authorization.
The regulator said the move was aimed at protecting legally acquired broadcasting rights and ensuring compliance with Nepal’s telecommunications and intellectual property regulations.
