Women earning income through doll-making and pickle production

DANG: Tika Kumari Sarki, a resident of Tulsipur Sub-metropolitan City-7, was once confined to household chores and spent most of her time in the kitchen. However, after learning doll-making skills, her daily life has changed significantly.

“Earlier, I used to stay at home without any work, but now I have started making dolls,” she said.

Similarly, Meena Lamichhane of Tulsipur-6 is busy producing pickles. She makes and sells pickles prepared from garlic, chillies, panch, bodi and other locally produced items. Through this enterprise, the women have become financially independent.

The days of depending on other family members for household expenses are now over. “Earlier, whenever we needed something, we had to ask family members for money,” Lamichhane said. “Now we earn on our own.”

Sarki and Lamichhane are only a few examples. Many women in Tulsipur are now engaged in income-generating activities. After receiving 15-day training in pickle production and doll-making organized by Sewa Pratishthan Dang with financial support from the Social Development Division Office, Tulsipur, the women have started earning through self-employment.

Women from wards 6, 7 and 9 of Tulsipur participated in the training programs. According to Giriraj Pandey, Chief of the Social Development Division Office, Tulsipur, 25 women received training in pickle-making, while 47 were trained in doll-making.

The participants learned to prepare 11 varieties of pickles and nine types of dolls and cushions. The doll-making training included rabbit, panda and Ganesh dolls, as well as tire cushions, love cushions, flower cushions and square cushions. Likewise, the pickle-making training covered boiler pickle, mixed pickle, timur pickle, bodi pickle, bitter gourd pickle, lemon pickle, bhago chop pickle, and garlic and ginger pickle.
