KATHMANDU: Around 2.5 million farmers across the country have been enrolled in the farmer registration system operated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment.
According to the Ministry, farmers have been registered based on land ownership details and agricultural production data. Sanjeev Pandit, an official at the Agricultural Information Centre, said the electronic registration system has been introduced to ensure easier access to subsidies and essential agricultural support, with the aim of boosting overall production.
Citing the Agricultural Census 2021, which recorded a total of 4.13 million farmers nationwide, Pandit said efforts are underway to register more than 1.6 million remaining farmers.
He added that once the registration process is completed, the Ministry plans to categorize farmers into four groups: subsistence farmers, small-scale farmers, medium-scale farmers, and large-scale farmers.
“After classification, we will issue farmer identity cards and integrate them into a digital information system,” he said. “Based on these identity cards, it will be easier for the government to provide subsidies and services such as chemical fertilizers, seeds, and other agricultural inputs in an organized manner.”
The data collection has been carried out in coordination with local governments across the country. The Centre has also urged remaining farmers to register under the system.
