KANCHANPUR: The tiger census has started at Shuklaphanta National Park from Tuesday, authorities said.
As part of the national tiger count, automatic cameras have been installed not only in Shuklaphanta but also in the nearby Laljhadi–Mohana protected area and Jogbudha in Dadeldhura, according to the park office.
A formal event was held this morning to mark the beginning of the census. The park has been divided into 260 grids, each measuring 2 km by 2 km, covering the Shuklaphanta–Laljhadi–Jogbudha landscape.
Previously, 43 tigers were recorded in Shuklaphanta, which has been conducting annual tiger counts. Spanning 305 square kilometers, the park is one of the few areas in Nepal with a high tiger density, largely due to the abundance of prey species.
Senior Conservation Officer Chandrashekhar Chaudhary said 580 automatic cameras have been deployed and a technical team of 77 personnel will participate in the census.
