Economist-turned-politician Swarnim Wagle re-elected from Tanahun-1

DAMAULI: Economist and policy expert Swarnim Wagle has been re-elected to the House of Representatives of Nepal from Tanahun-1, securing a second term in parliament.

Wagle won the seat with 38,040 votes. In the previous by-election from the same constituency, he had secured victory with 34,911 votes.

Originally from Gorkha, Wagle grew up in a modest background. Showing an early interest in academics, he later pursued higher education abroad and completed a PhD in economics.

During his academic career, he focused on development economics, public policy and economic reforms. His research and expertise enabled him to participate in international policy discussions.

After completing his studies, Wagle worked with several international organizations, particularly in programs associated with the United Nations, where he contributed to initiatives related to development, poverty reduction and economic policy.

Upon returning to Nepal, he served as vice-chair of the National Planning Commission of Nepal. During his tenure, he was involved in shaping long-term development plans, economic policy reforms and governance initiatives.

After years of working in the policy sector, Wagle entered active politics, arguing that effective implementation of policies also requires political leadership.

He joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party, a move many observers described as a transition from technocratic leadership to political leadership.

During his campaign in Tanahun-1, Wagle emphasized development, good governance, job creation and economic reform as his main agenda, engaging directly with voters and advocating results-oriented politics.

Today, Wagle is widely seen as a leader with strong policy expertise in Nepal’s political landscape, and his experience in economic and development policy is expected to bring a distinct voice to parliament.
