KATHMANDU: Four political parties have crossed the proportional representation (PR) threshold in the vote count for Nepal’s House of Representatives of Nepal, according to the Election Commission Nepal.
The parties that have secured the required threshold are the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the Nepali Communist Party.
According to the latest figures released by the commission, RSP has secured 3,950,810 votes under the proportional representation category. Nepali Congress has obtained 1,330,101 votes, while the Communist Party of Nepal has received 579,626 votes.
Meanwhile, the Shram Sanskriti Party has garnered 287,645 votes so far and is yet to cross the threshold.
The Election Commission said a total of around 10.9 million votes were cast under the PR system. As per the constitutional provision, a political party must secure at least three percent of the valid votes to qualify for PR seats. This requirement is known as the threshold.
In the 275-member House of Representatives, 110 lawmakers are elected through the proportional representation system, while 165 are elected through the first-past-the-post system.
Vote counting under the direct election category is almost complete. The commission aims to complete the counting of proportional votes by the morning of March 10.
After the final PR vote count, the commission will determine the number of seats each qualifying party will receive based on the votes secured. Political parties will then be asked to recommend the names of lawmakers from their closed lists, ensuring representation under the inclusive cluster system.
Following verification of the recommended names, the commission will finalize the list of PR lawmakers and issue certificates.
According to Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the commission aims to complete all related processes by March 19.
