Barshaman Pun calls for parliamentary probe over alleged changes in financial bill

KATHMANDU: Nepali Communist Party leader and former Finance Minister Barshaman Pun has said that a parliamentary investigation committee may be necessary over alleged alterations in the Finance Bill presented in Parliament.

Speaking to journalists at the Parliament building in Singha Durbar on Monday, Pun described the alleged changes in tax rates within the Finance Bill as a serious economic offense requiring deeper scrutiny.

He said Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle should come to Parliament and clarify the issue in detail.

Pun also expressed concern that unauthorized changes in the financial bill had raised suspicions of fiscal leakage and irregularities.

“The Finance Bill was presented in Parliament, and any arbitrary correction or alteration raises serious concerns,” he said.

He added that a parliamentary probe committee could be formed depending on the seriousness of the issue.

On a separate issue, Pun reiterated that Prime Minister Balen Shah must personally come to Parliament to clarify his controversial remarks related to national sovereignty and border issues, rather than leaving the explanation to the foreign minister.

He said the prime minister’s statement on national independence and territorial integrity was serious and incorrect, prompting strong opposition from lawmakers.

Pun expressed confidence that the disputed remarks would be addressed in the next parliamentary session, including removal from the parliamentary record and a possible clarification or correction from the prime minister.

His remarks come amid continued parliamentary obstruction and escalating political tensions over both fiscal governance and recent political statements.
