KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane has said that issues that need to be addressed through diplomatic channels should be handled carefully and in a phased manner rather than with public fanfare.
Speaking upon his return to Nepal on Friday after a five-day visit to India, Lamichhane said diplomatic matters should not be dealt with by “beating drums.”
Responding to questions about the Nepal-India border dispute at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Lamichhane said he would work to facilitate dialogue and seek solutions through diplomatic channels.
“The most important thing is to address any issue through diplomacy by activating diplomatic channels. Such matters cannot be resolved by beating drums or through loud public rhetoric,” he said. “Wherever action is necessary in the interest of the country, it should be taken quietly and in a phased manner.”
He also stressed the need to understand diplomacy as a sensitive and responsible matter. “If the country’s most trusted political party does not understand the responsibility and sensitivity of diplomacy, then it will not be effective in diplomatic affairs,” he said.
Lamichhane added that while taking a popular stance may be easier, diplomacy requires patience and a step-by-step approach.
“It may be easier to gain popularity, but solving problems requires a process. Diplomacy also has its own stages. Nepal has traditionally handled such matters through the proper diplomatic process, and it continues to do so today,” he said.
Lamichhane returned home after a five-day visit to India on Friday. He traveled to India at the invitation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Nabin.
During his visit, Lamichhane met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP leader Nitin Nabin, and other senior officials.
He also held a meeting in India with Sergio Gor, Special Envoy for South and Central Asia of U.S. President Donald Trump.
