National Economic Census to kick off mid-March

KATHMANDU: The government is set to conduct the second National Economic Census from April 15 to June 20 to provide an accurate statistical picture of Nepal’s economy.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) unveiled the census schedule, log, and theme—“Economic Census for Measuring Economy”—at a program in Kathmandu on Monday.

Deputy Chief Statistics Officer Dhundiraj Lamichhane said the census will gradually release detailed information starting from fiscal year 2026-27. He emphasized that the survey is crucial for collecting reliable data necessary for economic policies, planning, and development strategies.

The census will gather information on the number, type, investment, employment, production, and service flow of industries, trade, businesses, services, cooperatives, and both private and public institutions.

Chief Statistics Officer Dr. Kamal Prasad Pokharel said the census will play a key role in strengthening the institutional foundation of economic statistics, aid in GDP estimation, guide investment promotion, and support employment creation and short- and long-term government planning.

The first economic census, conducted seven years ago, recorded 923,356 business institutions and involved 3.228 million people, with around 30 percent of businesses managed by women. The census categorizes economic activities into 21 sectors and will collect basic information on 18 sectors.
