Govt preparing law to make national forensic lab internationally credible: Minister Pokharel

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has said that the government is preparing necessary legislation to make Nepal’s forensic science laboratory more credible and aligned with international standards.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Education, Health and Information Technology held at Singha Durbar on Thursday, Minister Pokharel said the proposed National Forensic Science Laboratory (Establishment and Operation) Bill aims to regulate and strengthen the country’s national-level forensic system.

He clarified that the bill is not intended to regulate all laboratories in the country, but specifically to establish a legal framework for a dedicated national forensic institution.

The minister said the initiative is focused on strengthening the scientific collection and analysis of evidence required for criminal investigations and justice delivery through modern forensic methods.

He added that the government is committed to refining the bill through extensive discussions and necessary improvements before finalizing it.

During the meeting, committee members stressed the need to advance the bill in a way that ensures modernization of the national forensic laboratory with advanced technology.

The committee has decided to move forward with clause-wise discussion only after consultations with experts on the proposed legislation.
