WASHINGTON DC: The US House of Representatives has approved a resolution aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from taking further military action against Iran.
The measure passed by a 215–208 vote, with four Republicans joining Democrats in a rare bipartisan challenge to the ongoing conflict, which began in February. It marks the fourth attempt by the House to restrict Trump’s war powers, which critics argue have not been properly authorized by Congress.
The resolution still requires approval from the Republican-controlled Senate. Even if it clears the upper chamber, it is unlikely to fully limit US military operations against Iran. Trump also retains the option to veto the measure, which would need a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override.
A similar proposal advanced in the Senate in May after several failed attempts, but it has yet to be brought to a full vote.
In the House, Republicans Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson broke ranks to support the measure alongside Democrats. Democrat Jared Golden of Maine, who had previously opposed similar efforts, also voted in favor this time.
Republican lawmaker Tom Barrett of Michigan said, “Congress alone declares war, and that is something we need to protect.” He added that he was not concerned about political repercussions, stating he votes according to his conscience.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrat Gregory Meeks called the vote “a significant bipartisan rebuke of President Trump’s illegal and costly war in Iran and the first step toward ending it once and for all.”
