Medical Education Commission to reissue directives and procedures following legal amendment

KATHMANDU: The Medical Education Commission has decided to reissue all directives and procedures previously introduced by the Commission after completing the required legal process.

The decision was taken at the Commission’s 24th meeting held on Wednesday at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Balendra Shah.

According to the Commission, the move became necessary after Section 35 of the Legislation Act rendered all previously issued directives and procedures ineffective.

The meeting was co-chaired by Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel and Minister for Health and Food Safety Nisha Mehta.

The Commission noted that Section 54(b) was added to the National Medical Education Act through an ordinance amending certain Nepal Acts in 2026. The new provision grants the Commission explicit authority to formulate and implement necessary directives and procedures in accordance with the Act.

The meeting also delegated authority to the Commission’s Vice-Chairperson to issue directives to universities, academic institutions and professional councils involved in medical education to facilitate effective regulation and coordination of the sector.

Among those attending the meeting were Commission Vice-Chairperson Prof Dr Shree Krishna Giri, members Prof Dr Mandira Shah and Bandana Khanal, Joint Secretary Basant Prasad Koirala, and Sheshu Dhungana, among other officials.
