KATHMANDU: The National Assembly meeting has been postponed until June 9 after lawmakers protested, demanding that the Prime Minister withdraw his recent statement regarding Nepal–India border issues.
As soon as the House convened on Wednesday, National Assembly members stood up in protest, insisting that parliamentary proceedings would not move forward unless the Prime Minister revised or withdrew his remarks. Following the continuous disruption, the meeting was postponed for a week.
Earlier in the session, National Assembly member Sunil Bahadur Thapa described the Prime Minister’s statement as irresponsible and factually incorrect, calling for an apology and withdrawal.
He further argued that the remarks were immature and could negatively impact Nepal’s relations with its neighboring countries. Thapa also demanded that if the Prime Minister had evidence of border encroachment, it should be formally presented in Parliament.
As protests continued with lawmakers standing and chanting objections, National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal urged members to allow the House to proceed. However, as the obstruction persisted, he announced the postponement of the session until Jeth 26.
The House has been repeatedly affected in recent days due to protests over the Prime Minister’s remarks, reflecting growing political tension within the upper chamber.
