NEPALGUNJ: Research on syphilis has begun at Bheri Hospital, Nepalgunj. A one-year scientific study will examine the economic and social aspects of syphilis, particularly among adolescents and young women affected by risky sexual behavior, informed Dr. Badri Chapagain, Chief Consultant, Dermatologist, and Venereologist at Bheri Hospital.
Dr. Chapagain emphasized that the disease should not prevent people from seeking employment abroad. He noted that a “Venus Corner” has been established at Bheri Hospital for the testing, treatment, and consultation of patients. “As the risk of syphilis increases, this initiative ensures patients have easier access to hospital services,” he said.
Leading the study, Dr. Chapagain stated that syphilis should not be viewed solely as a personal health issue. “Syphilis is a complex public health problem linked to social behavior, foreign employment, uncontrolled use of drugs, and policy gaps. This study aims to present the realities observed in daily medical practice based on scientific evidence,” he explained.
Dr. Chapagain also highlighted that many individuals who have completed treatment are currently being disqualified for foreign employment due to a single positive ‘TPHA’ blood test. He warned that this has serious implications for employment, family life, and mental health, and stressed the need to establish with evidence that a positive test does not necessarily indicate transmission of the infection.
The study is expected to provide factual information on the true prevalence of syphilis, practical challenges in treatment, confusion among health workers, and the social stigma faced by patients. The findings are also expected to inform improvements in national STI guidelines and health policies related to foreign employment.
Dr. Chapagain urged the public to prioritize timely testing and treatment, stressing that syphilis is a treatable disease. The research will be conducted from 1 January to 31 December 2026.
