Monsoon brings heavy rainfall to Koshi Province

KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division has reported heavy to very heavy rainfall in Koshi Province following the early arrival of the monsoon.

Monsoon winds began sweeping through the province from Thursday night, leading to a sharp increase in rainfall. This marks the fastest monsoon onset in Nepal in 57 years.

According to the Division, very heavy rainfall has been recorded in several areas of Koshi Province over the past 12 hours.

As of Saturday morning, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is being observed across many parts of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, and at isolated locations in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The Division warned: “Very heavy rainfall has occurred in parts of Koshi Province over the past 12 hours. As the rain-bearing system continues moving northward, further rainfall is likely. Please take necessary precautions.”

Meteorologists classify rainfall intensity as follows:

Light: Less than 10 mm in 24 hours

Moderate: 10–50 mm

Heavy: 50–100 mm

Very heavy: 100–200 mm

Extremely heavy: Over 200 mm

They also explain that “some places” refers to rainfall in about 50% of an area, “a few places” covers 25–30%, and “one or two places” refers to less than 25%.
