Balen Shah requests city police to adopt softer tone in public engagement

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah has stressed the need for closer cooperation and coordination between the metropolitan police and other state security agencies.

Speaking at the 33rd Metropolitan Police Day program today, Mayor Shah urged the police to actively enforce laws, policies, and regulations. He appreciated the role of the metropolitan police in removing encroachments, protecting public property, and maintaining good governance and public order.

Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol instructed the police to work for the benefit of the public and institutions rather than for individuals. “The metropolitan police should always stand with citizens during festivals, public events, and times of need, serving as a strong representative of the institution,” she said.

Additional Inspectors General, Tek Bahadur Tamang, noted that the collaboration between Nepal Police and the metropolitan police has led to effective results in removing unauthorized structures, encroachments, and street obstacles.

Raju Pandey, Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan Police, highlighted ongoing initiatives to clear unauthorized structures, manage traffic, and handle disaster and public sanitation within the city. The police force has also been actively monitoring markets, controlling public smoking, managing stray animals, and maintaining proper drainage.

On the occasion of Metropolitan Police Day, the police carried out cleaning campaigns at Swayambhunath and Basantapur Durbar Square, as well as tree plantation drives at various locations across the city.

Established on August 30, 1993, the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police currently employs 362 personnel. Last year, the force took action against 20,734 vehicle owners for violating regulations and penalized 397 individuals for dumping waste in unauthorized areas, generating Rs 35.6 million for the municipality.

During the ceremony, the “Metropolitan Police Pride Award” was presented to Senior Inspector Laxmi Maharjan. The “Outstanding Metropolitan Police Award” was given to Havildar Balakrishna Karki, while the “Metropolitan Police Award” was awarded to Havildars Vijay Tamang, Maniram Khanal, and Police Constable Philipe Saru Magar.
