Shekhar and Gagan resume dialogue after 11-month silence

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala and General Secretary Gagan Thapa, who are both preparing separate bids for the presidency of the party, have resumed dialogue after 11 months.

The two leaders, who had formed a joint panel during the party’s 14th General Convention, met on Friday at Koirala’s liaison office in Baluwatar. A source close to Koirala confirmed that the two had a conversation after nearly a year of silence.

“The party president had called a meeting of the disciplinary committee on Friday. Before that, Dr. Shekhar invited the General Secretary to his office, where they held talks,” the source said.

The meeting reportedly took place after increasing pressure from party leaders and cadres who were concerned about the growing rift between the two prominent figures within the same faction. Central committee members Sanjay Kumar Gautam and Rajiv Koirala were also present.

According to the source, Koirala and Thapa also held a private discussion during the meeting.

Their last known conversation had been during discussions over ministerial nominations when the Nepali Congress was part of the coalition government with CPN-UML.

On Friday, the two reportedly discussed issues related to the party’s disciplinary committee, active membership, and preparations for the upcoming general convention.
