NTB CEO calls for collective action to protect the Himalayas

KATHMANDU: Chief Executive Officer of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Deepak Raj Joshi, has stressed the need for shared responsibility in conserving the Himalayas.

Speaking at a program marking the 72nd International Everest Day and the upcoming World Summiteers Summit 2025, Joshi emphasized the urgency of protecting the Himalayan ecosystem from growing threats.

“The Himalayas face complex challenges — from climate change and excessive tourism to environmental degradation and the socio-economic insecurity of mountain communities,” Joshi said. “We must act together and without delay.”

Highlighting the significance of the upcoming World Summiteers Summit, Joshi said it would be held every two years to bring together mountaineers, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote responsible mountaineering and sustainable development.

“This summit is not just a celebration of successful climbs,” he noted. “It is a platform to promote the Himalayan region’s adventure tourism, ecological value, and cultural richness.”

Joshi also stressed the importance of local communities in long-term conservation.

“The true custodians of the mountains are the people who live there. Sustainable solutions must prioritize their experiences, voices, and futures.”

The summit aims to establish a tradition of responsible mountaineering and mutual respect for nature and people. Joshi expressed hope that it will help foster greater awareness and collaboration at both national and international levels.

“We are all connected by the Himalayas. Let us unite for their sustainable future,” he said.

The event, organized under NTB’s leadership, is expected to serve as a milestone in building global momentum for Himalayan conservation and the promotion of eco-conscious adventure tourism.
