LALITPUR: A total of 1,280 inmates escaped from Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur during the nationwide Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9, which were marked by vandalism, arson, and attacks on public institutions.
Of those who fled, 587 prisoners have voluntarily returned, while some have been relocated to various prisons across the country. However, 651 escaped inmates have yet to return, despite repeated public notices issued by the Nakkhu Prison administration.
The Department of Prison Management has set a final deadline of October 6 for all escaped inmates to surrender voluntarily. If they fail to comply within this time frame, legal action will be taken in accordance with the Prison Act, 2079 BS.
The Department has urged families, local governments, security agencies, media, and other stakeholders to assist in locating and returning the escaped prisoners. Authorities have made arrangements for the inmates to surrender at the nearest police station, prison, or relevant government office.
