Security tightened in Kathmandu as UML and pro-monarchists plan separate events at same venue

KATHMANDU: Today, both the pro-monarchy forces and the ruling CPN-UML are set to hold separate demonstrations at Ratna Park, Kathmandu.

To avoid conflict, the District Security Committee of Kathmandu has scheduled the programs at different times.

According to an agreement reached in a committee meeting, UML’s Republic Day program will conclude by 2 PM, after which the royalists’ program will begin at the same location.

Kathmandu Chief District Officer (CDO) Rishiram Tiwari coordinated with Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden, who agreed to start the royalist event only after UML’s program ends.

Kathmandu Police Chief SSP Bishwa Adhikari stated that a security plan has been prepared in coordination with both parties.

Lingden confirmed to the CDO that the pro-monarchy program will commence in the afternoon and that preparations are being made accordingly. UML has also been instructed to conclude its event by the scheduled time.

While the UML will celebrate Republic Day with a cultural event supporting the republic, the royalists are planning an anti-establishment demonstration at the same venue.

Citing the potential for tension, UML had requested security arrangements from the administration.

The situation presents a growing security challenge, as royalist groups plan to launch their anti-establishment movement from Ratna Park.

Police authorities said that the police will ensure the programs proceed lawfully and will take action against any violations.

Royalists also plan to organize rallies in each province, with each led by a senior leader.
