PM Oli directs timely completion of 10th National Games
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has instructed the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the leadership of the National Sports Council (NSC) to ensure the 10th National Games are conducted effectively and within November.
Speaking during a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, Oli stressed the need to accelerate preparations, noting that the event would serve as a crucial precursor to the 2026 Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan.
The Prime Minister, who also serves as the patron of the NSC, stressed the importance of setting the date and venue of the games based on careful study and ensuring that the decision, once made, is not altered.
Parliamentary Committee inspects TU Cricket Ground
The Monitoring and Evaluation of the Implementation of the Directive Principles, Policies and Obligations of the state Committee has conducted an inspection of the Tribhuvan University (TU) Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.
Currently, the ground is undergoing upgrades, including the installation of floodlights and parapets. Due to delays in the project timeline, the construction company has been penalized, and work is now continuing under these conditions.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is preparing to organize the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) at the venue under floodlights and with open parapets.
Nepali Congress launches national debate on AI for development
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshapes global discourse, the Nepali Congress (NC) has stepped forward to initiate a structured debate on how Nepal can harness AI for national development.
On Sunday, the party launched a discussion series titled “AI: Overall Analysis for Nepal’s Development” at its central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur.
NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, addressing the event, said AI presents unprecedented opportunities for development if used wisely. He highlighted the party’s commitment to building a ‘Digital Nepal’ centered on innovation, good governance, and citizen empowerment.
Health Ministry dispatches rabies vaccines and antivenin across Nepal
The Ministry of Health and Population has dispatched rabies vaccines and snakebite antivenins to all seven provinces to address reported shortages in health institutions under provincial governments.
Dr. Pawan Jung Rayamajhi, Chief of the Management Division at the Department of Health Supplies, confirmed the nationwide distribution. The move follows media reports highlighting vaccine scarcity, prompting Health Minister Pradip Paudel to instruct swift action.
According to the Department, 51,180 vials of rabies vaccine have been delivered, with Bagmati Province receiving the highest quantity at 10,080 vials. Additionally, 1,000 vials of antivenin have been distributed, with Madhesh Province—known for high snakebite cases—receiving the largest share at 2,500 vials.
NEPSE slides 2 points as daily turnover shrinks
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) continued its downward trend on Monday, closing 2.07 points lower compared to the previous trading day.
Despite showing a gain of 12 points during the final minutes, the weighted average price adjustment pulled the index down, settling it at 2,962 points.
This followed a sharper decline on Sunday, when NEPSE shed 18.44 points. The market opened weak on Monday and dipped significantly, reaching a low of 2,918 points by 12:38 PM, the lowest point of the day. It later recovered partially, swinging through minor fluctuations before closing with a modest loss.
All phones switched off as 16 family members vanish in Sindhuli
Authorities in Sindhuli have launched an intensive search operation after 16 members of a single family from the endangered Hayu community mysteriously disappeared from Golanjore Rural Municipality–6.
Despite the effort, police say they have found no trace of the missing family, and none of their mobile phones can be reached.
According to local officials, the family, led by Urmila Hayu, has not been seen since Thursday night or early Friday morning. Their absence was discovered only on Monday morning, when neighbors noticed livestock left unattended and a kitchen shed scorched by fire.
Entire family of 16 mysteriously missing in Sindhuli
Sixteen members of a single family have gone missing from Golanjore Rural Municipality-6 in Sindhuli district, prompting a police investigation into their sudden and unexplained disappearance.
According to local authorities, the family of Urmila Hayu, residents of Bhandas Bhippar Kateri, have been out of contact since Sunday night. Their absence was reported to police on Monday morning by neighbors who discovered the house abandoned.
A joint team from the District Police Office and local representatives reached the site shortly after the report. The house was found deserted, with livestock, including goats, chickens, and buffalo, left untended. A kitchen shed next to the main house was partially burned, though the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Over Rs 840 million in insurance claims filed after Rasuwa flood
Insurance claims amounting to over Rs 840 million have been filed following the devastating flood that struck Rasuwa district on July 8.
According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, a total of Rs 843.81 million worth of insurance claims had been submitted as of July 24.
The largest portion of claims, Rs 580.1 million, comes under property insurance, with six major claims filed in that category.
MCC compact to continue in Nepal
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact between Nepal and the United States will continue as planned, following the conclusion of a review process initiated under the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, the Ministry of Finance confirmed on Monday.
In a press statement, the Ministry said it received official notification from MCC dated July 24, 2025, informing that the suspension and review, which had been in effect since January 20, 2025, under an executive order, has now concluded. The MCC has recommended the continuation of Nepal’s compact.
“The MCC, through its recent correspondence, has stated that the review process has ended and has recommended the continuation of Nepal’s compact,” the statement reads.
NEA chief reaches Chitwan after load-shedding rumors
Amid growing concern over irregular electricity supply and rumors of load-shedding in Chitwan, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya arrived in the district on Monday morning to personally oversee and expedite the resolution of the technical issues plaguing the Chanauli Distribution Center.
Shakya’s unexpected visit comes as a technical team from the NEA is working around the clock to restore normal electricity supply, with the goal of resuming full power distribution by Monday evening.
“There is no load-shedding,” Shakya clarified upon his arrival in Chitwan. “We are facing technical issues at the Chanauli substation and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.”
Eight major highways blocked across Nepal
Eight major highways across Nepal have been completely blocked following incessant rainfall that began on Saturday night, according to Nepal Police Headquarters.
The affected roadways include the Koshi Highway in Sankhuwasabha, Pasang Lhamu Highway in Rasuwa, Araniko Highway in Sindhupalchowk, Mid-Hill Highway in Nuwakot, the Jajarkot-Dolpa-Bheri Corridor in Rukum West, another section of the Mid-Hill Highway in Jajarkot, Karnali Corridor in Humla, and a key bridge linking Nepal to China in Rasuwa.
The disruption has caused major challenges to transportation and logistics, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions already prone to landslides.
Two pilgrims found dead after drowning in Gosaikunda
Two pilgrims who went missing on Sunday evening while bathing at the sacred pilgrimage site of Gosaikunda have been found dead on Monday morning.
A rescue team from the Nepal Army recovered the bodies of Manoj Nyaupane of Belbari, Morang, and Sujan Dhakal of Biratnagar, according to Hem Bahadur Shahi, Chief of the District Police Office, Rasuwa.
The Nepal Army had reached Gosaikunda on Sunday night and stayed overnight to carry out the search and recovery operation at first light.
Deputy Speaker Rana returns from China
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Indira Rana Magar, returned to Nepal last night after completing a six-day official visit to the People’s Republic of China.
During her stay, Deputy Speaker Magar participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Media and Think Tank Summit, held from July 23 to 27 in Henan Province.
Addressing the summit’s inaugural session, she reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the principles and objectives of the SCO, expressing optimism that the organization would play a pivotal role in promoting prosperity among its member states.
Gold prices unchanged
Gold prices have remained unchanged on Monday.
According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of gold remains unchanged at Rs 193,600 per tola.
The price of silver, however, has increased by Rs 5 and is now set at Rs 2,295 per tola.
Nepal Bar Association signs agreement with Social Security Fund
The Social Security Fund under the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security has signed an agreement with the Nepal Bar Association, formally bringing the legal fraternity into the country’s growing social protection system.
The memorandum of understanding was signed during a ceremony held on Sunday evening in Kathmandu.
Speaking at the event, Labour Minister Sharatsingh Bhandari described the agreement as a pact of trust and praised the inclusion of a respected institution like the Nepal Bar Association in the Social Security Fund.
Why Prem Kumar Rai must resign for the sake of the CIAA
The credibility of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has come under serious strain following the publication of the Special Court’s full verdict on the wide-body aircraft procurement scandal.
In a rare move, the court named and directly criticized CIAA Chief Commissioner Prem Kumar Rai, raising serious ethical questions about his continued presence in office.
The court, while sentencing several officials involved in the wide-body procurement case, pointed to what it called “selective prosecution” by the CIAA, suggesting that while Rai, then serving as Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and chair of the Nepal Airlines board, had played a central role in forming the procurement subcommittee, he faced no legal scrutiny in the case.
Ramechhap’s main roads remain in a state of disrepair
Roads across Ramechhap district have become muddy and difficult to drive on, primarily due to construction delays and poor contractor performance.
Many rural, unpaved roads have turned impassable, worsened by landslides in several areas.
Work on key road projects and bridges, including the Manthali–Pakarbas–Goganpani–Galwa road, the Sitkha–Goganpani–Dhulebesi–Bhotnagi road, and the Khimti–Rasnalu–Those road, has been delayed. These projects fall under the jurisdiction of the District Infrastructure Office.
Drinking water facility reaches 400 households in Myagdi
A total of 400 households in Malika Rural Municipality–3 of Myagdi have gained access to drinking water after the successful completion of three local water supply projects.
With support from Nepal Newa, cooperation from an external organization, and voluntary labor contributions from locals, water taps have been installed in individual homes—replacing the previous reliance on public taps.
According to Ward Chairman Moti Prasad Budha, 225 households in Dadagaun, Kiteni, Aul, Saragdi, and Syagalung, 122 in Patle, and 53 in Lumpipar have benefited from the projects.
Devotees flock to Pashupatinath and Shiva temples across the country
Today marks the second Monday of the holy month of Saun. From early morning, large crowds of devotees have gathered at Pashupatinath Temple and Shiva shrines across the country.
To facilitate the worshippers, all four gates of the Pashupatinath Temple were opened from 3 am.
The month of Saun is considered sacred for Lord Shiva, and Monday is believed to be his favorite day. It is a long-standing tradition for devotees to fast and worship Lord Shiva on this day.
Nepali Army distributes drinking water in Birgunj amid shortage
In response to a severe drinking water shortage in Birgunj Metropolitan City and across Parsa district, the Nepali Army’s Shree Jung Battalion has been distributing an average of 100,000 liters of water daily via tankers.
The battalion, in coordination with the Madhesh Province Government, has been delivering water three times a day to affected settlements. Lt. Gen. Lokendra Karki, commander of the Shree Jung Battalion, said six tankers are being deployed daily to distribute water in various wards of Birgunj and surrounding municipalities.
“We are targeting the general public facing an acute shortage of water, distributing tanker supplies three times a day,” said Karki. “The operation spans multiple wards within the metropolis and extends to other municipalities in the district.”
