World Day for Safety and Health at Work observed today

KATHMANDU: The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is being observed globally, including in Nepal, today.

The theme for World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025 is “Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work.”

Marked annually since 2003 at the call of the International Labour Organization (ILO), this day highlights the importance of preventing accidents and diseases in the workplace.

The observance is part of the ILO’s global strategy to ensure occupational safety and health.

One of the key components of the ILO’s Global Strategy is advocacy, and World Day for Safety and Health at Work serves as a crucial tool for raising awareness about workplace safety and health, as well as the need to elevate the political profile of occupational safety, according to the ILO.

April 28 is also recognized as the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers, an event organized by the trade union movement since 1996.

Occupational Safety and Health Day is an important platform to spread awareness about ensuring workplace safety and health, and to prioritize this issue politically.

This year’s theme is particularly relevant in the digital age, as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools are reshaping the landscape of health and safety at work. Robots are increasingly being used for hazardous tasks, such as heavy lifting, handling toxic materials, and working in extreme temperatures.

Digital devices and sensors are also improving safety by detecting potential threats. However, it is essential to implement proper regulations and protective measures to ensure the safety of workers.
