NEA reports profit of NPR 11.36 billion in six months



KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reported a profit of NPR 11.36 billion for the first six months of the current fiscal year (FY 2081/82 BS) 2024/2025.

According to the details released in accordance with the Right to Information Act, the Authority earned a total of NPR 70.44 billion from electricity sales, interest, and other sources during this period.

A total of NPR 59.08 billion was spent on electricity purchases, administration, various projects, and other expenses.

As a result, the NEA’s unadjusted profit (before tax) from Shrawan to mid-Poush of the current fiscal year is projected at NPR 11.36 billion.

The Authority, which faced an annual loss of NPR 8.89 billion in FY 2072/73 BS, has consistently been in profit since the following years. In FY 2080/81, the NEA earned a profit of NPR 14.46 billion.

The profit generated is being reinvested in projects aimed at expanding and strengthening infrastructure for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as electrification.

During the first six months of the current fiscal year, the NEA collected NPR 53.18 billion from electricity sales.

A total of 6.31 billion units of electricity were purchased, including NPR 1.15 billion from the NEA’s subsidiaries and affiliates, and NPR 5.16 billion from private generating companies.

The total expenditure for purchased electricity amounted to NPR 34.84 billion.

Additionally, the NEA imported 242 million units of electricity from India, at a cost of NPR 1.65 billion.

Between the Nepali months of Shrawan and Poush, the NEA exported 1.81 billion units of electricity to India, earning NPR 13.09 billion in revenue.

In terms of development, the NEA spent NPR 13.35 billion on various projects and electrification under the government’s development budget and foreign aid.

Of this, NPR 10.49 billion was directly allocated as foreign aid to Bhutan.
