KATHMANDU: Nepal’s public debt has climbed to Rs 2.72 trillion, according to the Public Debt Management Office, which reported a steady increase in both internal and external liabilities during the first four months of the current fiscal year.
As of the first day of the fiscal year, the country’s total public debt stood at Rs 2.6 trillion. In the review period, the figure rose by Rs 55 billion.
The government’s internal debt has now reached Rs 1.2 trillion, while external debt obligations stand at Rs 1.4 trillion.
In the first four months of the ongoing fiscal year, the government raised Rs 138 billion in public borrowing. During the same period, it spent Rs 1.2 trillion on principal and interest payments.
The Sushila Karki-led government, formed after the Gen-Z uprising, has so far borrowed Rs 57 billion, the office stated. It has also paid Rs 71 billion towards principal and interest on existing public debt.
The government had set a target of mobilizing Rs 595 billion in public debt for the current fiscal year. By the end of Kartik, it had utilized 23.29 percent of the annual borrowing target.
