BIRATNAGAR: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula has emphasized that any amendment to the constitution should be carried out with the consensus of all political parties, along with a comprehensive review of the state’s systems, especially as the country marks a decade since the promulgation of the constitution.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Sitaula noted that while an amendment may technically be possible with the support of just the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, broader consensus involving the House of Representatives, National Assembly, and provincial governments is essential to ensure legitimacy and inclusiveness.
To address growing public frustration, the senior leader stressed the importance of honest and effective governance, improved service delivery, and accelerated national development. He urged state institutions to focus on integrity and accountability.
Sitaula also called on political parties to strengthen internal democracy and prioritize the nation and its people. He underscored the importance of listening to opposition voices in a functioning democracy.
He further stated that leaders of all parties must act responsibly to uphold and strengthen the federal democratic republican system.
Commenting on the recent controversy involving the Home Ministry, Sitaula said the Home Minister should not resign over a matter still under investigation by a constitutional body.
On national issues, Sitaula said that debates on the possibility of a referendum or the demand to declare Nepal a Hindu nation should take place in Parliament. However, he firmly opposed any attempt to reinstate the monarchy.
