KATHMANDU: Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising has clarified that Nepal has not incurred any loss while purchasing electricity from India.
Speaking at a meeting of the Public Policy and Appropriations Committee under the National Assembly, Minister Ghising explained that the bilateral agreement with India allows Nepal to buy electricity at a cheaper rate.
“Without a bilateral agreement with India, we would have had to purchase electricity at Rs 8.10 per unit. After the agreement, we are buying it at Rs 6.95 per unit, which has saved around Rs 120 million,” he said. According to the agreement, Nepal is currently importing 180 MW of electricity from India.
On the same occasion, Nepal Electricity Authority Executive Director Manoj Silwal said that importing electricity from India is essential to ensure supply during the winter season.
