Seven charred Chuchepati Bhat-Bhateni victims remain unidentified after Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: The identities of seven people who were burned during the Gen-Z protests at Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket in Chuchepati on September 8 and 9 remain unknown, police have said.

Spokesperson of Kathmandu District Police, SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, confirmed that these seven victims were discovered in a completely burned state during the arson and vandalism that took place amid the protests. A total of 76 people lost their lives during the demonstrations.

“The seven bodies found inside the Chuchepati Bhat-Bhateni were completely charred. We sent them to the forensic laboratory, but due to the severe burns, extracting DNA samples has been extremely difficult,” SP Bhattarai said. “Without DNA samples, it is impossible to match them with the families of the presumed victims.”

He added that the identification process has been halted for the time being. “Since DNA samples cannot be collected in Nepal, we are considering sending the remains to a country with advanced facilities for identification. For now, the process has been suspended,” he said.
