Ramechhap’s Majhi community unites to preserve cultural heritage

MANTHALI: The Majhi community of Ramechhap has launched a cultural preservation campaign aimed at safeguarding their unique traditions—from birth rituals to funeral customs.

Spearheaded by the Majhi Awareness Center, the initiative brings together community members to protect and promote their fading cultural identity.

Balkrishna Majhi of Manthali Municipality-8 emphasized that Majhi traditions are on the verge of extinction due to a lack of awareness among younger generations.

“We are launching this campaign to educate not only Majhi youth but also members of other communities about our cultural practices,” he said.

As part of the initiative, Bahadur Majhi, coordinator of Majhe Sawa, and Prof. Dr. Krishna Bhattachand, a sociologist, shared insights into the culture and identity of the Majhi people.

The campaign officially began in Gaikhura, Manthali, with an inauguration ceremony led by Manthali Municipality Chief Lav Shrestha, who lit a traditional lamp to mark the occasion.

The event received financial support from the Central Committee of the Nepal Indigenous Nationalities Upliftment Foundation.
