KATHMANDU: Nearly 90 per cent of the population in Bara and Parsa districts has been vaccinated against cholera through a two-phase immunization drive.
According to Dr. Abhiyan Gautam, Head of the Family Welfare Division at the Department of Health Services, 88.25 per cent (322,926) of people in Bara and 90 per cent (589,354) in Parsa received the vaccine. The campaign targeted residents aged one year and above, running from October 12–19 in Bara and October 30–November 13 in Parsa.
Dr. Gautam noted that the two districts achieved the highest coverage to date, compared to earlier campaigns which typically reached 70–80 per cent of the population. Those who missed the drive, approximately 10 per cent, received the vaccine through the regular immunization programme.
The Department of Health Services had launched the anti-cholera drive in six local levels in Bara and 14 local levels in Parsa following a cholera outbreak in the last week of August.
