KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana has stated that the prevailing culture of negativity in Nepali society is a major barrier to national development.
Speaking at a reception organized by the Nepali People’s Liaison Committee, Japan, in Tokyo, Minister Rana emphasized that the pervasive mindset of defeatism—embodied in attitudes such as “nothing will change” or “it’s not possible”—must be overcome for meaningful progress to take place.
“This kind of thinking, which is common not only among political parties but also within Nepali society and the diaspora, must be abandoned. Only a positive environment can support nation-building,” she said.
Dr. Rana criticized the tendency to overlook positive developments while amplifying negativity.
“Good work is being done in Nepal and within society, but it rarely gets acknowledged. Instead, it seems that going viral for the wrong reasons has become the trend. A country cannot function on negative publicity alone,” she remarked.
She called on non-resident Nepalis (NRNs) to unite and adopt a constructive outlook. “The global Nepali diaspora holds immense potential. United, you have the strength to advocate for your rights. My appeal is simple—avoid division over petty issues and strive for a unified NRNA,” she urged.
Dr. Rana clarified that the government supported the recent NRNA convention by adhering to a Supreme Court directive, and that the new executive committee was formed through consensus.
She also encouraged NRNs to invest their skills, knowledge, and capital back in Nepal, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the diaspora.
“After assuming office, I initiated the establishment of a dedicated department within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide consular and other essential services to Nepalis abroad,” she said.
“We’ve also set up a special branch for economic diplomacy focusing on the diaspora. Moving forward, the active involvement and support of Nepalis around the world will be crucial—and the government expects this partnership,” Minister Rana concluded.
