Russian missile strike kills six Ukrainian soldiers during training

KYIV: A Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian military training ground has killed six Ukrainian servicemen and injured at least 10 others, according to a statement from Ukraine’s national guard on Wednesday. The attack occurred on Tuesday during a training session.

Following the incident, the unit commander has been suspended, and an internal investigation is now underway. Authorities have also shared details of the incident with law enforcement agencies, according to Reuters.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Tuesday that its missile strike on the Sumy region—located near the Russian border in northeastern Ukraine—killed up to 70 Ukrainian soldiers, including 20 instructors. However, Ukraine has confirmed a lower toll.

The Ukrainian national guard emphasized that the investigation will determine legal accountability for those responsible for decisions related to the training exercise and its security.

This is not the first time such an incident has prompted scrutiny; previous attacks on training sites have led Ukraine to investigate possible negligence. Throughout more than three years of Russia’s full-scale invasion, similar strikes have targeted military educational centers and organized troop gatherings.
