Police tighten security in Kathmandu ahead of RPP rally

KATHMANDU: Security has been heightened in the capital since early Sunday morning after the royalist Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) announced its intention to breach the restricted area in protest.

In response, the police administration has deployed a ‘cordon and search’ operation to secure key government installations and sensitive zones.

According to Central Police Spokesperson DIG Dinesh Acharya, the security deployment aims to maintain law and order without disrupting the daily lives of ordinary citizens. “We have not received any request for permission from the RPP to hold demonstrations in restricted zones,” he said.

Under this special duty, heavy police presence has been ensured in and around sensitive government institutions, including Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, Parliament House, the President’s Office, the Vice President’s Office, the Prime Minister’s residence, and the Speaker’s residence.

Security has also been reinforced in Babarmahal, Tinkune, Bhadrakali, Maitighar, Dhungedhara, Gairidhara, Bhatbhateni, Khorsanitar, Maharajgunj, and Narayan Gopal Chowk.

Additional personnel from the Police Training Center in Panipokhari have been mobilized.

Traffic has been diverted in several parts of the city, including a vehicle stop at Askal Campus, where routes toward Balaju are being redirected through Thamel. Authorities are reportedly prepared to detain individuals attempting to enter the restricted areas in violation of security protocols.

The RPP’s planned protest is aimed at what it calls the government’s increasingly autocratic tendencies. While the party has said the demonstration will be symbolic and peaceful, the Home Ministry has warned that any action encouraging constitutional violations or public disorder will not be tolerated.
