Concerns of Nepali students in Odisha addressed through diplomatic talks: Foreign Minister

KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana stated that the Nepalese government is taking the death of Prakriti Lamsal, a student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, seriously and is working to resolve the matter through diplomatic channels.

Upon returning from the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat, Oman, Rana informed reporters at Tribhuvan International Airport that she had spoken to Odisha’s Higher Education Minister, Suryavanshi Suraj, urging a fair investigation into the incident and legal action against those responsible. She also emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe environment for Nepali students in Odisha.

She said Minister Suraj assured that the Odisha government is taking the case seriously, forming a high-level investigation committee to pursue justice for Prakriti and take action against the culprits.

Rana said that Nepal had immediately initiated diplomatic measures following the incident. She noted that the university apologized and reinstated Nepali students to the hostel after addressing misconduct by college staff.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi are coordinating closely with the Odisha government and university administration to ensure an impartial investigation and the safety of Nepali students.
