World Toilet Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: World Toilet Day is being marked today across various countries with awareness campaigns focused on ensuring access to safe and adequate drinking water, ending open defecation, and expanding sustainable and clean sanitation services.

Officially recognized in 2013, the day aims to improve water quality, promote the sustainable management of water resources, and strengthen international cooperation and capacity building in the areas of water and sanitation.

The United Nations has stated that building safe and accessible toilets for all is an urgent global priority and emphasized that this day should serve as a strong reminder of the goal to achieve universal access to water and sanitation.

According to the UN, 3.4 billion people still lack safely managed sanitation services, and 354 million continue to practice open defecation. Ensuring proper toilet facilities is essential to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 and protecting women and girls from related risks.
