KUSHINAGAR (INDIA): Unidentified bodies have been recovered from the Gandak (Narayani) River in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India, following the August 26 severe floods in Rasuwa, Nepal, in which a large number of people went missing. Uttar Pradesh shares a border with Nepal.
According to the Kushinagar district administration, 13 bodies have been recovered from the river so far. Of them, six are men and seven are women.
According to BBC Hindi, six of the bodies have been kept at the mortuary of Kushinagar Medical College. Due to limited space, the remaining seven bodies have been sent to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur.
The local administration said teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are continuing their search along the Narayani River, given the possibility of finding more bodies.
Indian authorities said that “all necessary action is being taken regarding the bodies as per the prescribed rules.” The district administration is in contact with the Nepali authorities and is informing Nepal about the recovered bodies through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the administration, the bodies will be handed over to Nepal after post-mortem examinations and other necessary procedures are completed. The administration has also established a control room to assist people arriving from Nepal.
