Top Leaders Meet to Resolve Transitional Justice Deadlock

KATHMANDU: Top leaders of Nepal’s three major political parties convened a meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday to discuss the long-standing issue of transitional justice.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ were present at the meeting

Although a law related to transitional justice is already in place, the two key commissions—the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons—have yet to be formed. The failure to appoint officials to these bodies has delayed the implementation of the transitional justice process.

A search committee was previously established to recommend appointments to the commissions, but it has not been able to put forth any names.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and PM Oli’s legal advisor Agni Kharel were also present at the meeting.
