Indian Army Chief Dhiraj Seth arriving in Kathmandu today

KATHMANDU: Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu at 4 pm today on an official visit to Nepal to receive the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army.

President Ramchandra Paudel will confer the honorary rank on General Seth during a special ceremony at Sheetal Niwas on Monday.

General Seth, who assumed command of the Indian Army on June 30, 2026, has chosen Nepal as his first foreign destination since taking office. His visit is the highest-level visit by an Indian official since Balendra Shah became prime minister.

During his stay, General Seth will hold bilateral talks with Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel on matters of mutual military cooperation.

He is also scheduled to pay tribute at the Military Pavilion in Tundikhel and meet Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who also oversees the defence portfolio.

The conferral of the honorary rank continues a tradition established in 1950, under which Nepal and India confer the honorary rank of general on each other’s army chiefs.

As part of the tradition, Nepali Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel received the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army from Indian President Droupadi Murmu during a ceremony in New Delhi on December 12, 2024.
