Opposition lawmakers demand Madhesh Provincial Assembly meeting

KATHMANDU: A group of 32 lawmakers has submitted a letter to Madhesh Provincial Assembly Deputy Speaker Babita Raut Ishar, urging her to convene a provincial assembly meeting.

The move comes while a proposal against Assembly Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal, accusing him of not acting in accordance with his position, is under consideration. On Tuesday, members of the opposition party delegation met the Deputy Speaker to request the assembly session.

Bharat Sah, parliamentary party leader of the Maoist Centre, representing the opposition, presented the letter along with signatures of provincial assembly members, urging Deputy Speaker Babita Raut to call a meeting on Wednesday, November 19.

Sah said the provision requires at least 25 percent of provincial assembly members to request a session, which would allow discussion on the proposal against the Speaker. He said that the assembly meeting is being requested to advance the deliberation process regarding the proposal.

The demand for the meeting has been backed by lawmakers from Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, Janmat Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, CPN (Unified Socialist), and the Maoist Centre.
