KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the party will hold discussions before making a decision on the renewal of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s party membership.
Addressing the party’s Politburo meeting today, Chairman Oli stated that Bhandari was nominated for a second presidential term with the understanding that she would not return to active politics.
According to a member present at the meeting, Oli remarked, “Her party membership has not been renewed yet. Based on what has been raised, she should not re-enter active politics. This is a matter of trust. The decision on membership will be made by the appropriate committee after due deliberation. This is my personal view.”
Oli also emphasized the need to stop internal discord within the party. “The party is under a serious and organized attack,” he said, according to the attendee.
“At such a time, creating internal turmoil is irresponsible. This must be stopped immediately—if not, the party will take necessary steps to stop it.”
He further noted that he learned about Bhandari’s possible return to active politics through media reports. “The party had sent her for a second term. As per constitutional provisions, the position of President requires one to remain outside of active politics after completion of the term,” Oli was quoted as saying.
He also pointed out the distinction between being elevated to a position and actively engaging in party politics.
Chairman Oli concluded by urging party members to adhere to internal processes and protocols. “Discussions about party structure and policy should happen within the party,” he said. “It is inappropriate to go public when the party is under attack.”
